Middle School: Grades 5th–8th
At St. Paul’s Episcopal School, our Middle School is intentionally designed to help students grow into confident scholars, compassionate leaders, and responsible citizens. Beginning in fifth grade, students experience greater independence while continuing to benefit from the personalized attention and close relationships that define our school community.
Our small class sizes allow teachers to know each student well, providing the encouragement, challenge, and support needed to help every child reach their full potential. As students prepare for high school, they develop strong academic skills, character, leadership, and the confidence to navigate an ever-changing world.
A Strong Academic Foundation
Beginning in fifth grade, students transition to a departmentalized schedule, working with subject-area teachers in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. This model encourages greater responsibility, organization, and independence while providing the expertise of teachers who are passionate about their disciplines.
Our curriculum is intentionally designed to be both challenging and engaging, encouraging students to think critically, solve problems creatively, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others. Students study both Spanish and Latin, building language skills while strengthening vocabulary, critical thinking, and an appreciation for history and culture.
By eighth grade, students are completing coursework such as Algebra I and physical science, preparing them for success in rigorous high school programs. Students seeking additional academic challenges may also participate in our award-winning Science Olympiad and Math Olympiad teams, where they develop teamwork, perseverance, and problem-solving skills while competing throughout the year.
The Eighth Grade Experience
The eighth-grade year serves as the culmination of a student's journey at St. Paul’s, bringing together academic challenge, leadership opportunities, and unforgettable experiences.
Students engage in accelerated coursework while preparing for the expectations of high school. Increased independence and responsibility are balanced with the support of dedicated teachers who know each student personally and are invested in their success.
Experiential learning is a hallmark of the eighth-grade program. Students embark on a week-long outdoor education adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, where hiking, camping, Whitewater rafting, and rock climbing foster resilience, teamwork, leadership, and confidence. They also travel to Memphis, Tennessee, where history comes alive through an immersive study of the Civil Rights Movement.
The year concludes with a beloved St. Paul’s tradition, our annual eighth-grade musical production. Every student participates as a performer while also contributing to choreography, set design, and production, creating a collaborative experience that celebrates creativity, teamwork, and personal growth.
Prepared for High School and for Life
The goal of a St. Paul’s education extends beyond academic achievement.
Our graduates leave with the knowledge, confidence, character, and leadership skills to thrive in high school and beyond. They are well prepared for rigorous academic programs and are frequently recognized as leaders within their new school communities.
Just as importantly, they leave St. Paul’s with a lifelong love of learning, a commitment to serving others, and the strength of intellect and strength of character that have guided our mission for more than sixty years.
