Service Learning & Sustainability

At St. Paul’s Episcopal School, we believe education should inspire students not only to achieve academic success, but also to become thoughtful, compassionate leaders who make a positive impact on the world around them. That belief is reflected in our commitment to service learning and sustainability—two foundational elements of the St. Paul’s experience that are woven throughout every grade level and every aspect of school life.

As a school community, we strive to help students understand that they have both the ability and the responsibility to care for others, contribute to their communities, and serve as stewards of the world they will inherit. Through meaningful experiences both inside and outside the classroom, students learn that even the smallest actions can create lasting change.

Service Learning

Service learning at St. Paul’s goes beyond traditional community service. Students are encouraged to identify real-world needs, build meaningful connections with others, and apply their learning in ways that make a difference. Through age-appropriate projects and partnerships, students develop empathy, leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, and a deeper understanding of their role within a larger community.

Beginning in our Little Saints program and continuing through eighth grade, students engage in service experiences that connect classroom learning to authentic community needs. Whether collecting supplies for local organizations, supporting environmental initiatives, mentoring younger students, or participating in school-wide service projects, students learn that serving others is both a privilege and a responsibility.

Collectively, St. Paul’s students contribute more than 6,000 hours of service and service learning each year, demonstrating the school’s commitment to developing compassionate citizens and servant leaders.

Sustainability Education

Sustainability is not simply a program at St. Paul’s—it is a mindset. Our students are encouraged to think critically about the environmental, economic, and social challenges facing our communities and to consider how their actions impact the world around them.

Through classroom lessons, hands-on projects, outdoor learning experiences, and school-wide initiatives, students explore what it means to live sustainably and responsibly. They develop an understanding of how individual choices affect local and global communities while learning practical ways to create positive change.

Our sustainability curriculum encourages students to become thoughtful problem-solvers who are prepared to address the challenges of the future with creativity, innovation, and compassion.

Developing Habits of Mind

At the heart of our service learning and sustainability programs are the values and character traits we hope to cultivate in every student. Through these experiences, students develop the habits of mind that will serve them throughout their lives, including:

  • Empathy and compassion for others
  • Awareness of community needs
  • A willingness to take meaningful action
  • Effective communication skills
  • Collaboration and teamwork
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Responsibility and stewardship
  • Respect for diverse perspectives

These habits help students become engaged citizens who understand that leadership is rooted in service and that positive change begins with individual action.

Recognized for Excellence

The impact of St. Paul’s commitment to service learning and sustainability has been recognized by accreditation teams and educational leaders alike.

Service Learning

"Service learning is woven into the fabric of St. Paul’s Episcopal School. The inclusive and comprehensive approach is internal and external, intergenerational and varied, providing numerous opportunities for students to teach, mentor, and serve others."

Sustainability

"The commitment to sustainability provides a distinctive dimension to the School. Sustainability is admirably incorporated into the life of the School and is a signature aspect of the St. Paul’s experience."

Community Resilience

"The rebirth and resurgence of St. Paul’s Episcopal School since Hurricane Katrina is remarkable and inspiring. The perseverance of administrators, faculty, families, and volunteers reflects the strength and spirit of the St. Paul’s community."

A Culture of Purpose

Service, sustainability, and resilience are more than programs at St. Paul’s—they are part of who we are. Every day, students are encouraged to look beyond themselves, care for their communities, and recognize their ability to make a meaningful difference.

By fostering a culture of service, stewardship, and leadership, St. Paul’s prepares students not only for success in high school and beyond, but also for lives of purpose, compassion, and impact.
